Arturo L. Benavides Elementary School

The existing campus of AL Benavides Elementary School was located in the center of the small but historical community of San Ygnacio, TX. The local vernacular is typical of Mexican buildings of that region: massive stone walls,, and a pitched roof with wood roof framing. We decided to make a building that used the same stone material as local buildings, but also reflected Mexican architecture of the greater region, which includes low slope roofs and arched windows and doors. The entry lobby was designed to be a sort of ‘mini-museum”, which includes glass display cases inset in the stone walls, and adequate wall space for hanging photographs of the old town of San Ygnacio.
